Basic Dyes

Basic Dyes are the perfect colors for hard-to-dye substrates. Developed for acrylic, these dyes are also great on wood, reeds, straw, paper, leather and hemp! Use them for potpourri, wigs, buttons…the list is endless.

They are bright, beautiful and easy-to-use. In fact, basic dyes may be used to color a variety of fibers (including silk and wool), but because they tend to have poor light- and washfastness ratings, they are generally only used when other dyes (such as acid dyes or fiber reactive dyes) are not an option. Despite their poor lightfastness, however, basic dyes offer some of the most vibrant and intense colors available for any fiber, and may be used whenever maximum color intensity is desired.

Batik Wax

One-pound tray of water-soluble batik wax.

Calgon

Minerals in untreated, hard water can interfere with dye reaction. Calgon is a water softener which neutralizes metallic ions in tap water, allowing for a deeper, more level dyeing. It is also used to soften the water in marbling and other textile arts where minerals might interfere with the process.

Carageenan

Carageenan is a gelling agent that provides viscosity for marbling on fabric. Slowly sprinkle one teaspoon of Calgon and two teaspoons of Carageenan into a quart of water in a running blender. Mix as many batches as you will need at least 12 hours before marbling.

Citric Acid

Citric Acid is a mild, odorless, powdered acid for use with acid dyes. It can be used in place of vinegar to help fix acid dyes and exhaust the dye bath.

Cochineal Natural Dye

Cochineal is among the most ancient and versatile natural dyes on the planet. It has excellent light and washfastness properties and produces a beautiful range of reds, scarlets, violets, fuchsias and purples. Permanent on all natural fibers, cochineal is often used with a mordant such as alum. The color (carminic acid) comes from the bodies of female insects of the species Dactylopius coccus. These parasitic insects are farmed on the prickly pear cactus (nopal), which is native to Mexico, Central and South America.

Jacquard’s Cochineal comes directly from a small, family owned and operated, organic farm co-op in Lima, Peru.

Cyanotype Set

This set makes DIY cyanotype printing as easy as can be. The chemistry comes pre-measured in lightproof black bottles. Simply fill each bottle with water to create Stock Solutions A & B and mix the two in equal parts to create the cyanotype sensitizer. Coat fabric or paper with the sensitizer and, once dry, create prints by exposing to sunlight or UV (3-15 minutes, depending on conditions), using objects or a film negative to create an image. After exposure, prints are processed in a tray of cool water and allowed to air dry. This set contains enough chemistry to make approximately 65 8½" x 11" prints on paper or 50 8½" x 11" prints on fabric, depending on the absorbency of the substrate. The set includes Part A – Potassium Ferricyanide, Part B – Ferric Ammonium Citrate and instructions.

It is also great for painting, tie-dyeing, screen-printing, stamping, batik and more. Shake well before use. Apply to fabric or paper using a brush, sponge or brayer. While still damp, expose the design to sunlight and watch the color magically appear. The artist can place objects on a coated substrate to block development during exposure. Any object that casts a shadow will create a pattern. Use a film negative to create permanent photographs on paper or fabric. After image exposure, wash out the undeveloped dye with SolarFast Wash (JAJSD1902) and hot water, agitate vigorously. Machine washing is recommended for textiles. Color development is not fully complete until after washing. This dye thins and cleans up with water. The dyes can be blended together to generate personalized color themes. For screen-printing applications, use SolarFast Thickener (JAJSD1901).

This is especially important for preserving white areas and highlights when making photographic prints. For machine washing use 3-4 capfuls (24ml) per load. Set washer to hot for best results. For front loading machines with a pre-wash flush, add SolarFast Wash after pre-wash and before wash cycle. For hand washing fabric or paper, submerge in hottest tap water possible, add 1-2 capfuls (10ml) SolarFast Wash, agitate constantly and keep water flowing for 10 minutes. It is available in 4oz. and 8oz. bottles

Soy Wax

Made from a vegetable by-product, this wax is biodegradable and has no fumes when heated. It is popular for candlemaking as it is non-toxic and burns cleaner than paraffin. It has a low melting temperature and can be used for a gentle cold water batik dye method. It washes out with hot water and soap.

Spirit Body Art Transfer Paper

Body art made with henna and jagua lasts a long time (up to two weeks) and creating a new design directly on the skin can be nerve-wracking. When it comes to giving yourself, your friends or your clients a temporary tattoo, Body Art Transfer Paper can provide peace of mind. It is especially useful for transposing designs from paper (a sketchbook, magazine or even computer screen, for instance) to the skin. Marbling Colors

Marbling is the ancient art of floating paint on the surface of thickened water (known as the “marbling size”) and then transferring the floating design onto paper or fabric. It has a rich history throughout Europe and Asia. Jacquard’s marbling system (available in the Jacquard Marbling Kit) eliminates the guesswork that is typically associated with marbling and allows even beginners to achieve professional-quality results. All Jacquard’s Marbling Colors spread equally on the marbling size and produce the most intense colors possible.

On fabric, the Marbling Colors are soft to the touch and completely washfast after heat setting. On other porous and semi-porous surfaces, the paints have excellent adhesion.

Sodium Alginate SH

Derived from seaweed Sodium Alginate SH is a desirable thickener for Procion MX dye. It is used primarily for cotton and other cellulose fibers, but may also be used for silk when fine line definition is not required. It is also used to thicken dye for screen printing, painting or to control spreading.

Softening Additive

Jacquard Softening Additive is used to soften the hand of Jacquard Professional Screen Inks on fabric. Jacquard Professional Screen Inks are water-based, multi-surface inks with excellent adhesion on all sorts of textiles, including synthetic and waterproofed fabrics. Often, when printing on lightweight fabrics and apparel, a softer print may be desirable. Jacquard Softening Additive makes this possible.

Synthetic Gall

Adding Synthetic Gall to Jacquard Marbling Colors increases how much a color will spread on the marbling size. Add it to the paint to make one color dominate over the others or to increase the coverage on the marbling surface. Gall can add a whole other dimension to marbling and gives you much more control over the behavior of the paints. Jacquard’s Synthetic Gall may also be used with other acrylic paints for marbling or increasing flow

Versatex Screen Printing Inks

Designed for commercial silkscreening this printing ink is heavily pigmented and permanent. A thick and creamy consistency makes it a desirable medium for creating on textiles, as dyes for batiks, silk-screening, stenciling or block printing. It will not change the texture and softness of your fabric. Versatex colors are intermixable, water soluble, somewhat transparent and work best on light fabric. It's very effective on heavy canvas or filmy blends and may be brushed free hand directly on fabric. Colors are deepest when applied at packaged strength and become permanent when heat set properly. Extender may be added for pastels and translucent overlays. Mix colors with white for opaque pastels. Overlapping pastels yields new shades. Versatex will effectively print over light tones but will not hide dark tones.
