Art Jobs: Assistant Editor – The Getty

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks an Assistant Editor to collaborate with authors, editors, designers, and production coordinators to facilitate the publication of scholarly print and electronic art history books. This is a full-time hourly position reporting to the Managing Editor of GRI Publications. The Assistant Editor prepares manuscripts for editing; copyedits ephemera, exhibition materials, and essays to ensure clarity and conformity with editorial standards; collates corrections to page proofs and review them for errors; edits indexes; and represents publication projects in marketing meetings.

The Assistant Editor will be given the opportunity to complete courses in copyediting, proofreading, and digital media and to attend professional conferences. Responsibilities

  • Prepares manuscripts for editing and for transmittal to design.
  • Proofreads and copyedits texts, and checks corrections made by proofreaders and authors.
  • Assists with project management of publications, which may include communicating with Getty colleagues, authors, freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers.
  • Works with Rights Coordinator to ensure acquisition of high-resolution art and copyright permissions for heavily illustrated publications.
  • Develops knowledge of publishing through trainings, reading, and on-the-job experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the humanities (preferably in English or Art History); MA preferred
  • 1-3 years in publishing, preferably in a museum or university press environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and conventions of academic writing are helpful.
  • Reading knowledge or familiarity with one or more European languages is helpful.
  • Interest in the arts and a career in academic publishing is preferred.

Art Jobs: Sales Associate at David Kordansky Gallery

David Kordansky Gallery is seeking a highly motivated and organized professional who wants to be part of a rapidly growing, internationally renowned contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles. The Sales Associate role is a full-time position, five days per week (Tuesday – Saturday), and requires flexibility for additional hours and travel based on the needs of the Gallery.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain relationships with artists, collectors, consultants, curators, and other art world contacts
  • Develop and retain and in-depth knowledge of the gallery artists’ practices and biographies, and communicate these effectively to clients
  • Inform clients of upcoming exhibitions and fair presentations, providing supporting materials as needed
  • Meet quarterly sales goals
  • Communicate consistently and proactively with the sales team to review offers, sales, and sales opportunities
  • Attend gallery openings, art fairs, dinners, and other events on behalf of the gallery

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Fine Art, or a related field
  • Extensive sales experience in a contemporary art gallery or auction house
  • Exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated, trustworthy, and responsible
  • Able to work successfully in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency with Mac computers and programs; familiarity with ArtBase
